Directors (part-time positions)

Ridley Terminals Inc.

Ridley Terminals Inc. is a Crown corporation, located on federal lands leased from the Prince Rupert Port Authority, in British Columbia. The Corporation’s mandate is to provide continuous rail car unloading, product storage and loading services as a marine terminal. Its business involves the movement of bulk products (coal and petroleum coke) from unit trains onto ships and it plays a role in the movement of coal and other bulk commodities from Northern British Columbia and Northern Alberta to Asia.

The Board of Directors of Ridley Terminals Inc. is broadly responsible for setting the strategic direction for and overseeing the conduct and operations of the Corporation. The Board monitors management’s performance and ensures internal controls are in place to manage risks associated with the Corporation’s business and ensures the protection of its finances and accuracy of its financial reporting.

Per Diem: $220 - $260

Annual Retainer: $2,900 - $3,400

To be considered for one of these positions, please provide examples from your career that clearly demonstrate how you meet the following requirements in your application:

Education and Experience

  • A degree from a recognized university in a relevant field of study, or an acceptable combination of equivalent education, job-related training, or experience;
  • Experience serving as a member of a board of directors for a public or private sector organization, or as a senior executive answerable to stakeholders in the public or private sector;
  • Experience in dealing with representatives of government or the private sector, preferably senior level representatives;
  • Experience in the transportation sector or business community (preferably marine or rail);
  • Experience in dealing with Indigenous groups would be considered an asset; and
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: project management; engineering; public relations; law; communications; community relations; or stakeholder engagement would be considered an asset.

If you are selected for an interview, the following criteria will be assessed:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Ridley Terminals Inc.’s mandate, mission, strategic priorities, and business activities including the bulk commodities market and the transportation industry, preferably related to the rail or marine sector;
  • Knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of a Board member, including fundamental accountabilities to the Government of Canada as shareholder;
  • Knowledge of the public policy environment facing a Crown corporation, and a general understanding of the legislative environment in which Ridley Terminals Inc. operates, including the Financial Administration Act;
  • Knowledge of human resources and financial management, and a professional financial designation would be considered an asset for one or more of the positions;
  • Knowledge of strategic corporate planning, monitoring, and evaluation of corporate performance and of corporate governance, including good governance principles and best practices;
  • Knowledge of one or more of the following areas: law; accounting; finance; business administration; commerce or economics; engineering; transportation or marine industry; marketing; communications; or public relations would be considered an asset;
  • Ability to anticipate emerging issues;
  • Financial literacy;
  • Ability to contribute to debate and discussions among Board members; and
  • Strong communications skills, both written and oral.

Language Requirements

Proficiency in both official languages would be preferred.

Eligibility Factors and Conditions of Employment

In your application, it will be important that you confirm you meet the following requirements:

  • No officer or employee of Ridley Terminals Inc. or any of its affiliates, other than the chief executive officer of Ridley Terminals Inc., shall be a director of Ridley Terminals Inc. (statutory).
  • Directors must be willing to participate in scheduled Board meetings, plus additional meetings as required. Directors are also expected to chair or serve as a member of Board committees.
